The processor, or CPU, handles the main calculations of the computer. It affects how quickly programs open, how smoothly multitasking works and how well demanding software performs.

Processor compatibility matters

When replacing or upgrading a processor, the motherboard socket, chipset, BIOS support, cooling and power requirements must match. Older systems can sometimes be improved with a compatible CPU, but the whole platform should be checked first.

Cooling and stability

A processor also needs proper cooling. A noisy fan, dried thermal paste or overheating CPU can slow the computer down or make it unstable.
